  Black Swan wins Yorkshire Accolade
14 October 2008

The Black Swan Hotel, Helmsley, North Yorkshire has won the coveted award of “Hotel of the Year” by Yorkshire Life Magazine. The hotel beat off stiff competition and was award the prize in the 15 or more bedrooms category. The judges said: “The overall feel of the place was restful, stylish and special. This must be a winner!”

The team of independent and respected judges, who, between them have a wide range of experience in the food and hospitality industry, spent many weeks tasting and visiting establishments across Yorkshire before they made their final decision.

Presenting the awards at the glittering dinner were culinary experts, Prue Leith and BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration. hair of judges and Yorkshire Life Food and Wine Consultant, Annie Stirk, said judging this year had been exciting and it was clear that the hospitality industry in Yorkshire was very much alive and kicking. “We found the high standards among well established businesses remained high and continue to meet the exacting demands and expectations of the pubic. The winners also reflect the diversity of what is on offer and the talent in the county’s restaurant kitchens which are beginning to be recognised nationally in reviews and awards."

The Black Swan is the sister hotel to the Feversham Arms, (also in Helmsley) and has over the past year enjoyed a renaissance - bringing it back to its former glory. The addition of the Black Swan Tea room and new look restaurant are just a few of the steps that have led to this recent award.

The opening of the Verbena Spa at the Feversham Arms later this month, will add an additional dimension to both hotels and make the Black Swan an outstanding location for weddings as well as corporate events.

  Environmental Activity at Gleneagles
22 February 2008

'Responsible tourism' is high on the agenda at Gleneagles. The team at Scotland’s leading AA Five Star resort fully understand the importance of caring for the environment.

From the late 1990’s environmental performance has been high on the agenda throughout the resort, culminating in the hotel winning the pan European Award for Environmental Excellence in 2001 – recognition of the good practice carried out throughout the estate. Gleneagles also holds a Gold Award from VisitScotland’s Green Tourism Business Scheme, which recognises excellence in Environmental Management with significant good practice and established systems. The journey has continued, with one of the main focus’s now being aimed at the resort being carbon neutral by 2010.

The hotel will continue to take steps to minimise any detrimental impacts on the environment caused by the operation of the hotel, golf courses and estate. This will be achieved by ensuring the responsible use of energy, water and materials, in line with the environmental policy.

Current environmental initiatives include

The team at Gleneagles views this aspect of the business as a ‘journey’, during which they will create and evolve initiatives designed to help care for the special environment, in which they are privileged to work.

• Biomass boiler – launched Sept 2007, a 1250KW Woodchip Fired Heating System has been installed. This provides heating and domestic hot water to hotel, accounting for approximately 85% of the total heat demand. Converting from an oil-fired boiler will reduce the CO2 emissions by 2000 tonnes every year.

• Working closely with Perthshire Big Tree Country, Gleneagles will launch an initiative to protect and sustain the beautiful countryside that provides such a breathtaking location for the hotel. From 2008 guests will have the opportunity to donate a voluntary £1 supplement, per room per night, to be donated to re-planting and rebuilding Perthshire’s natural woodlands.

• Children too are being encouraged to care for their environment. Activities include – a weekly woodland walk, hosted by one of the hotel’s rangers, which introduces the youngsters to the basics of the countryside code; in the playroom, they learn about recycling by trying their hand at junk modelling; or for the more curious among them, bug hunting in the Laich loch!

The specially appointed environmental team at the resort considers all areas of the business from recycling glass, to reducing energy consumption by installing movement detectors on bedroom corridors. During redevelopment, trees are replanted, resulting in a fantastic natural environment for red squirrels and bats, experienced by guests on the woodland walk.

This ambitious programme represents a substantial monetary investment, with the true investment being placed on the future, ensuring generations can continue to enjoy the Scottish environment.

Gleneagles has an unrivalled reputation built on heritage. A reputation that is being jealously guarded and cared for, for generations to come.

Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles wins Scottish Chef of the Year 2008
31 January 2008

Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles has won the title of Scottish Chef of the Year at the Scottish Restaurant Awards 2008. The first ever Scottish Restaurant Awards ceremony was held at Edinburgh’s EICC on Monday 28 January. Andrew took away the premier chef award, beating both Martin Wishart and Tom Kitchin.

Scottish Chef of the year, Andrew Fairlie, creates signature dishes in his intimate, two Michelin-starred restaurant at Gleneagles.

Where every detail has been carefully planned to create a truly special experience - from the innovative original art on the walls through to the specially selected French cheeses and Scottish-grown herbs.

As Andrew received much of his chef's training in the South West of France with Michel Guérard, the cuisine is unashamedly French but with a Scottish twist.

Many of the ingredients for Andrew's gourmet menu come from the famous Rungis market outside Paris as well as from local Scottish suppliers.

The centrepiece is Andrew's signature dish 'Smoked Lobster', which involves smoking lobster shells over old whisky barrels for up to twelve hours.

The restaurant is open for dinner only, between 7 and 10pm each night except Sundays .

Perception to Represent The Gleneagles Hotel
28 August 2007

Hotel representation company, Perception Sales and Marketing, is delighted to announce they have been appointed to provide sales representation for The Gleneagles® Hotel within the Midlands and North of England.

Perception was launched in 2004 by Cath Couzens and has already earned an enviable reputation representing a strong portfolio of luxury hotels and spas around the world. The addition of Gleneagles, located in Perthshire, Scotland, only further strengthens their position in a competitive industry.

Appointed to specialise in the conference and incentive market, Perception will be working closely with both Gleneagles' Head of Sales, Val Eglinton and their regional sales team.

Director of Perception, Cath Couzens, commented ‘We are delighted to be working with such a world renowned hotel as Gleneagles and look forward to introducing new and existing clients to the corporate opportunities available at the hotel’.

This new appointment comes at a time of immense excitement at Gleneagles, as the resort is undergoing an £18 million development programme in preparation for hosting the Ryder Cup in 2014. This programme includes ten new suites, a Mediterranean deli-style restaurant and children’s zone, which all launched in July, plus a state of the art destination spa scheduled to open in early 2008.   New restaurant set to open at The Langham
22 August 2007

The Landau restaurant will open in late September at the Langham Hotel, London, with Andrew Turner returning to London to take up the position of Head Chef. The restaurant has been designed by David Collins Studio. The opening concludes the first phase of a multi-million pound refurbishment programme, which will see the transformation of the entire hotel by early 2009.

The Landau has been designed as a freestanding restaurant, with its own kitchen and a brand new street entrance on Portland Place, by David Collins Studio, who were chosen to spearhead the refurbishment by creating an entirely new bar and restaurant “corner” for the hotel. The bar, Artesian, opened in January 2007 to much critical acclaim.

Duncan Palmer, Managing Director of The Langham Hotel said: “The combined forces of Andrew Turner and David Collins Studio creates a ‘dream team’. We have already seen David’s genius at work in Artesian, and Andrew’s culinary pedigree speaks for itself. The new street entrance means that The Landau and Artesian will together become much more approachable — a real destination for this part of the West End, working well together, or as separate entities.”

Andrew Turner has successfully run many high profile
restaurants — most recently attaining a 3-star rosette standard for The Latymer restaurant at Pennyhill Park Hotel & Spa in Surrey and previously at ‘1880’ at the Bentley Kempinski, London which won a Remy’s Award with Hardens as one of the top 10 restaurants in London. His other restaurants have been recognised with awards from Decanter, Time Out and Square Meal magazines.

The Landau will be part of a jigsaw of rooms and new spaces created by David Collins Studio, starting from Artesian, through the private room, the Wine Corridor and into the dramatic new oval shaped restaurant. The chic 100-seat restaurant, with a brand new street entrance, echoes the feel of Artesian’s highly acclaimed design scheme, combining Oriental influences with the romance of Victoriana and some very exciting contemporary touches. Although Artesian and
The Landau are distinctly separate spaces, elements of this ‘contemporary orientalism’ have been extended to the restaurant interior. Gilded wall panelling, antique brass chandeliers, silk Chinoiserie screens and timbered flooring inlaid with resin and a palette of pale gold, jade
green and pastel blue, all lend a fresh contemporary feel.

Special features include an atmospheric ‘wine corridor’ linking the entrance lobby to the dining room, where the restaurant’s extensive world-class wine collection, chosen by a Master of Wine, will be displayed.

The Landau will open in late September 2007.
